Dr. Kadarusman

The explorer of un terra incognita, Dr. Kadarusman is an internationally recognised authority of the freshwaterfishes of the New Guinea and Australia  plus adjascent islands. He has a doctorat in evolution, diversity and conservation from the University of Tolouse, France.

 

He worked with multidisciplinary scientific teams and has lead 12 international joint scientific expeditions to remote areas of Papua. Year 2017 is a decade of his outstanding discoveries with the description of 15 new species to Science and has DNA-barcoded more than 1,000 fishes.

 

Since 2003, Kadarusman has been academic staff at Sorong Polytechnic of Marine and Fisheris (ex. APSOR).  In April 2016, he moved  to Jakarta Fisheries University (STP) for a temporary assignment. He teaches a number of under and postgraduate level subjects, conduct his long term resarch on aquatic biodiversity. He also supervises several research students including some European students.  

His work has been focusing on fishes systematic and evolution, using a hybrid approach, morphology and molecular. Kadarusman and team have succesfully domesticated 22 new species and varieties of Papuan Rainbowfishes (Melanotaeniidae). 

 

In honor of his exceptional contributions, he received national medals and international prizes including the Schutzenberger Award from AFIDES Institute in Paris. During a priode 2011-2013, his scientific documentary film “ Papouasie: enfer et contre tout ” has received six awards in Europe. His next series of documentary films (>2016) being production, e.g Lengguru: a lost world (Monalisa Production, Paris, Drectrice Christine Tournadre)

 

Dr. Kadarusman lives in Manokwari, West Papua with his wife Murtihapsari and children Nadim & Nadira.
